目前世界上黄金价格主要有三种类型：生产价格、准官方价格和市场价格。其他各类黄金价格均由此派生。
一、生产价格
生产价格是根据生产成本建立一个固定在市场价格上面的明显稳定的价格基础。以现在的汇价估算，黄金开采平均总成本大约略低于每盎司260美元。实际上，随着技术的进步，找矿、开采、提炼等的费用一直在降低，黄金开来成本呈下降趋势。
二、准官方价格
这是被中央银行用作与官方黄金进行有关活动而采用的一种价格。在准官方价格中，又分为抵押价格和记账价格。世界各国中央银行官方总储备量(各国中央银行往往是各国黄金的最大持有者)1998年大约为34000吨。按目前生产能力计算，这相当于13年的世界黄金矿产量，并且占已开采的全部黄金存量137400吨的24.7%，这是确定准官方金价的一个重要原因。
三、市场价格
市场价格包括现货和期货价格。这两种价格既有联系，又有区别。这两种价格都受供需等各种因素的制约和干扰，变化大，而且价格确定机制十分复杂。一般来说，现货价格和期货价格所受的影响因素类似，但由于决定现货价格和期货价格的因素错综复杂。
例如：黄金的近、远期的供给，包括黄金年产量的大小，各国央行黄金储备的抛售等;黄金的市场需求状况，这里又包括黄金实际需求(首饰业、工业等)的变化，黄金回收与再利用等;世界和各国政局的稳定性、通胀率的高低、利率以及一些突发事件都是影响投资者心理的主要因素，进而影响黄金价格的走势。
随着香港黄金市场等黄金市场的建立，全世界黄金市场已经连成了一个连续不断的整体，交易24小时不断。由于受上述各种因素的作用，世界市场上的黄金价格经常剧烈变动。
