黄金投资意味着投资于金条、金币、甚至金饰品，投资市场中存在着众多不同种类的黄金帐户。
自2002年开始我国逐步开放黄金投资领域，先后设立了上海黄金交易所和上海期货交易所黄金期货合约。由此黄金投资才逐步开放，并且到2005年才逐步向个人投资品种转化。
两大黄金交易模式都存在一主要不足：
1、两大交易所都采用集合竞价、撮合成交的交易机制，与国际黄金市场相对脱节。
2、黄金作为一个全球性的投资品种，金价连动性强，但是中国黄金市场对国际黄金市场的影响力还没有形成。
3、上海黄金交易所及期货交易所的黄金投资品种不能提供24小时连续交易，致使国内黄金价格常出现跳空开盘现象，投资者无法全方位地抵御不确定风险。
4、交易覆盖面的漏洞不能完全平抑市场投机行为，为地下炒金留下了生存空间，威胁投资者的利益，同时扰乱国家金融秩序
目前，个人投资者还不能在上海黄金交易所自己开户炒金，也就是说投资者主要是通过银行来投资黄金的。
对个人投资者来说，目前银行推出的黄金投资业务主要有三种：分别是账户金(只作投资，不能提取实物)、个人实物黄金买卖(能取黄金实物，但目前没有回购业务，不能卖给银行)、个人实物黄金投资(金交所授权银行开办此业务，既能投资，也可取实物金)。
